9/10/08 Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer.  A look at the life of a man raised in a wealthy family who abandoned it all for a life on the road.

Am I a bigot

People who know me know I am a strong Republican.  I plan to vote for John McCain because I believe he better represents my views.  I am also a white southern male.  Since I am not going to vote for Obama, because I disagree with his politics, am I a bigot?  It seems that every time I turn around there are commentators who seem to suggest any time I disagree with Obama I am being bigoted.  A comment I heard on CNN’s Roland Martin Show claims that the white people who are voting for Obama are also being bigoted because they are voting for him because he acts more “white” than “black”.  So it doesn’t matter, if you are white you are being bigoted no matter how you react to Obama.  So, I guess I am a bigot by that definition.

An Inconvenient Truth

I had to watch An Inconvenient Truth in Austin’s Environmental Science course.   I understand now some of the problems of the video.  It is touted as a treatise on global warming, which part of it is.  The other part is a personal look at Al Gore and many stabs at George Bush.  There are constant comments about the current administration and about personal issues Gore has with Bush.  It became obvious early on that Gore was bitter about 2000 and what has happened to him since then.  If the video had focused solely on global warming, I would not have had much of a problem with the video, other than my beliefs about global warming.  However, the attacks on Bush and his administration, bring the video to something beyond the stated purpose.  Gore should not be honored for attacks like this, he should be roundly condemned.

If this isn’t a scam, i don’t know what is.

Hurricane Coverage

Okay, for the last week, as Hurricane Gustav was heading toward New Orleans, the news outlets covered it almost 24 hrs a day.  If it wasn’t for Bristol Palin’s pregnancy the coverage would have been greater.  Now a hurricane is moving toward NC and how much coverage was there on CNN, Foxnews and MSNBC regarding Hanna?  Not much.  They seem to be preoccupied with digging up more dirt on Palin now.  Well, I understand the devastation Hurricane Katrina wrought on the New Orleans and gulf coast area, but it wasn’t too many years ago we had Fran and then later Floyd, which flooded a greater area than did Katrina and did about as much damage.  I know there was not as many deaths, because Eastern NC is not as populous, but the hurricanes were just as devastating.  Where is the concern of a repeat of those hurricanes?  Why does the national news outlets not think as much about NC as NO?  It is political.  The response to Katrina is considered a black eye to the administration.  The networks believe rehashing Katrina can only hurt Bush and hopefully McCain.  Let us not forget though, resources were in place to help the people in the path of Katrina, but that path was not directly at NO it was further east along the gulf coast.  No would not have been in danger if not for the levy breaks.  People seem to forget that point.  The history books now seem to indicate NO was directly hit, it wasn’t.  It was a secondary effect of the hurricane that caused the problem.  There is no one that can move the massive amount of resources needed to help NO as quickly as needed.  Plus, there were other communities that were as, if not more, devastated than NO.  Those communities seem to be forgotten too.  There is a hurricane baring down on NC and an even bigger one behind it.  We will be okay, we always have been.  So I don’t mind if you forget us, jsut don’t pretend to care when you really want to score political points.
