A letter to the editor from the News and Observer:

I'm sorry. Did I miss something? In the March 19 article "Ban on disposals has council grinding teeth," Raleigh Councilman Rodger Koopman equated the ban on garbage disposals with the sacrifice of war. Had we been asked to stop using pencils so the lead could go for bullets, then I get it. Pens it is. Had he offered some actual data showing the problems that disposals cause the water system, the environment or even increased work by the water and sewage department, then OK.
I can survive without a disposal, but he asks that with soldiers sacrificing in Iraq, why can't we sacrifice here and lose our disposals? Are you kidding me?

Between this and the tear-down ban, our new city council clearly has an agenda if not common sense.

Rich Carlino

Raleigh

I could not sum it up better.

Where's the sense of continuity between his comment and the issue at hand? Are they smoking some strong stuff up there in Raleigh these days?

Here's a bright idea (or two):

1. Let the cost per gallon of water follow the supply/demand curve, and invest the profits into expanding the water infrastructure.

2. If people use garbage disposals and it clogs the lines and causes problems, then pass the increased costs onto the customers. Perhaps give a credit to folks who don't have garbage disposals, since they in theory aren't causing the problems.

Hit people in the friggin' pocketbook. It's a language most people understand, and for the ones that don't ... well, a fool and his money are soon parted. Anybody want to cry for the fools of the world?
